BMW TOPS ‘BEST VALUE INVESTMENT’ RESEARCH
31/01/2012

BMW has long been renowned for high residual values. Now new research carried out on behalf of The Daily Mail has revealed that the top two best value investment cars are the BMW 3 Series followed by the BMW 5 Series.

The research was carried out by This is Money.co.uk’ and ‘motors.co.uk’ and was featured in a ‘Mail Online’ article on 8 September – a time when many motorists are buying new cars because of the license plate change. The piece, written by Lee Boyce, said that “car values can plummet at an alarming rate, but this can vary a great deal across manufacturers and models” so the research looked at the top five cars that held their value best since September 2010.

On the BMW 3 Series, Lee Boyce wrote: “On average, a new model cost just over £29,000 this time a year ago – and the same car is still worth £25,400. That’s just a 13 per cent drop.” He went on to say that the BMW 5 Series that cost £37,400 last year is now valued at £31,800, a 15 per cent fall.

To put these values into perspective, the Vauxhall Zafira (the car that the research found loses most value) was worth £22,000 in September 2010 and only £11,000 in September 2011 – a 50 per cent drop in value in just a year.
